Dr. Kurt Verkest
Dr. Kurt Verkest graduated with honours from the University of Queensland in 1995.
Dr Kurt is a general practitioner in full-time oncology practice. He treats cancer with surgery, chemotherapy, electrochemotherapy, and immunotherapy, performs biopsies, and staging of cancer cases. Most importantly, he spends time with owners to help them understand the process of treating cancer, and making appropriate decisions about cancer. Being a general practitioner with broad training, not a specialist with a narrow focus, Dr Kurt can guide patients and clients through all parts of their treatment. Commonly, patients presented for cancer turn out either not to have cancer at all, or to have other diseases that are as important as their cancers. Dr Kurt treats some of these himself, and refers others to other veterinarians in the Pets Central team.
Dr Kurt has been teaching veterinarians for many years. He presents at conferences in the USA, Australia and China. He provides advice on veterinary oncology (cancer medicine) to veterinarians around the world through the Veterinary Information Network. Kurt attained Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Medicine in 2001 and was awarded as the best candidate in Small Animal Medicine that year. He was awarded a PhD in the endocrinology of obesity in dogs by The University of Queensland in 2011.
Dr. Kurt’s interests included cancer surgery, cancer chemotherapy, palliative care, cytology, haematology, internal medicine and teaching / client communication.
