Unusual red spots on pets may indicate a fatal illness?

Latte recently visited Pets Central due to some unusual red spots on its belly. Dr. Belinda found that these “red spots” were skin bruises resulting from a lack of platelets.

One common cause of low platelets is immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMTP), where the immune system malfunctions and attacks the body’s own platelets. It is a potentially fatal condition!

At first, Dr. Belinda tried using medications to suppress the immune system, but the effects weren’t very promising. Eventually, after undergoing a blood transfusion and switching to new medications, Latte’s condition gradually improved. Hopefully he will be medications-free in a few months’ time.
